The Record, with a weekly Friday circulation of 4,500, is Homestead Publishing Co.'s second largest news publication. For more than 139 years, it has brought local news and information to communities at the head of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay in Harford and Cecil counties, including the municipalities of Aberdeen, Havre de Grace, Perryville and Port Deposit

With special features for the newspapers. In 1999, it was named the Newspaper of the Year by the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association.

The Record and its predecessor, The Republican, have been published in Havre de Grace since 1868, although the publication has changed several times over the decades.

Originally published as the Havre Republican, the paper's name was changed to the Havre de Grace Republican in 1887. In the early part of this century, the publication of The Republican, which had "The pioneer newspaper of Havre de Grace" in its flag, was Saturday morning.

The paper's name was changed to The Havre de Grace Record in the first week of 1947 and the paper's motto was changed to "Let the people know." On April 12 of that year, the publication day was changed to Friday.

The paper was published Friday mornings until Jan. 1, 1954, when the day was changed to Thursdays with the Jan. 7, 1954 edition. Starting Nov. 20, 1969, the motto "Let the people know" was taken off the paper's flag, which was changed to read "The Havre de Grace Record featuring the County Woman." The County Woman was a section of community news.

The paper's publication day was changed to Wednesday in 1971 and its name was officially shortened to The Record on Aug. 22, 1973. The type face was also changed from an elaborate script to the present, more modern style. "The County Woman" was eliminated that same day and the Feature section was initiated shortly thereafter.

April 3, 1992, The Record returned to Friday morning publication. It continues to flourish, garnering numerous awards from Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association and other prominent press associations every year.
